Married At First Sight's Mel Schilling opens up on her fitness regime amid cancer diagnosis – The Mirror

The dating expert worried fans this week when she announced she is battling cancer. She previously shared details of her health and fitness regime before her diagnosis.
Married At First Sight star Mel Schilling has previously opened up about her health and fitness regime before news broke she is battling cancer.
The 51-year-old Australian reality star has featured on E4's hit reality romance show since 2021 – and also offers relationship advice on the Aussie version of the show which she has featured on since 2019. This month, however, the star revealed how her world has turned upside down by a cancer diagnosis.
Sharing an update on social media on Tuesday 19 December, Mel revealed she is battling colon cancer, writing: "Last Thursday my consultant told me those 3 words… 'You have cancer'… About a month ago when I was filming in Australia I developed severe stomach cramps on set, I put it down to all the travel I’d been doing and the upset it caused to my system. I saw my GP in Sydney and he put it down to constipation, gave me some laxatives and sent me on my way. Fortunately I knew something still wasn’t right so I booked in for a scan when I returned to the UK. On Thursday I was told I had colon cancer and in an instant my whole life changed."
She added: "I feel incredibly blessed that it’s a cancer that is relatively easy to eradicate, I’m expected to make a full recovery though it’s a rough road ahead. I also feel so lucky to have an incredible support network around me, both personally and professionally, my own family and my TV family have been amazing this past few days."
Before her diagnosis, Mel says she turned her life around when the world went into lockdown during the 2020 pandemic – which saw Australia shut its borders and international travel was banned. Making the most of the awful situation, Mel says she became "obsesses" with exercise – and also started taking better care of her skin.
In a previous interview, Mel shared all the secrets to her physical and more cosmetic appearances as she embraced weight training and night masks to get herself into incredible shape. The mum-of-one, who is married to Gareth Brisbane, 51 – who runs an online betting company – continues to defy her age now she's in her fifties.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Mel explained her love for exercise. She said: "So I'm doing, twice a week. I'm working out with a personal trainer in a park. But then I'm also doing online, online weight training at home and yoga as well at home and my daily walk as well."
She also explained that the pandemic allowed her to pay better attention to her skin care regime. She said: "I'm taking so many opportunities just to be makeup-free, and, whether it's wearing a mask during the day or using some of my Biologi serums [and] oils.
"I wouldn't usually wear oils during the day. I usually wear them at night. But at the moment, because I'm not going anywhere, I'm using them during the day. So I'm putting a lot that hydration back into my skin, which is really important."
Mel has previously opened up about her own romantic life – having helped numerous couples find love on her reality show. The star has been married to Northern Irish husband Gareth since 2018 and their daughter, Maddie, is now eight-years-old.
She told the Belfast Telegraph last year: “I was single for my entire thirties. I wasn’t interested in anyone. I was busy travelling the world and working overseas. I was all about building my business and just living a great life. We were both nearly 40 when we met, and he just turned my world upside down. I was not expecting that.
“We met on [the dating website] Eharmony. He’s from Whitehead in Northern Ireland, but he was living in Adelaide and I was in Melbourne. We did long distance for six weeks, which was really pivotal in the success of our relationship, because we didn’t physically meet for those six weeks, but we were communicating every day. It was mostly email… I couldn’t talk to him on the phone at first because I couldn’t understand his accent.
“It was almost like a throwback to that retro style of dating where it was a phone call, [only] more instant with texting and social media. But I felt like that was a great way to build a solid foundation for a relationship before you complicate it with chemistry and sex. Once we got together, it was very quick.”
