Ajna Késely won the bronze medal in the 800m freestyle at the European Short Course Swimming Championships in Otopeni, Romania on Wednesday.
22-year-old Késely crossed the finish line with a time of 8:18.73, while another Hungarian, 18-year-old Nóra Flück, finished fourth with 8:26.96. Késely, who was second at this event in Glasgow in 2019, came in third overall (8:21.51) and Flück in fourth (8:30.48) in the only Hungarian final of the second day.
The 32-lap final went according to plan, with the French Anastasiia Kirpichnikova and Italian Simona Quadarella battling it out for the win, with no one behind them to challenge Késely for third place and Flück for fourth. Kirpichnikova won the event with a time of 8:08.48.

“A lot of people’s work is involved in this result, I have been working with Otto Kovács for almost a year and I am happy that I could bring a medal for the Hungarian team for Christmas. Obviously short track is not my sport, but it was a very nice way to end the year. We will continue with this momentum, and I am looking forward to the future,” Késely told MTI. She has already passed the required time for the Paris Olympics this year, so she will finish the year 2023 with success.
